As standard, the OEM rubber bushes used by BMW are relatively soft. They are designed with refinement, flexibility, durability, and low noise in mind, making them well suited to a vehicle designed for frequent road use.

However, rubber bushes have several disadvantages when subjected to performance driving. Under heavy braking, the OEM rubber bushes can flex enough to allow the wheel assembly to move rearward. This can create an unwanted change in toe geometry, contributing to a nervous or vague feeling from the front end under braking.

Flex within the factory rubber bushes can also contribute to understeer and reduce steering accuracy during hard cornering.

Toe

Toe refers to the angle of each wheel in relation to the longitudinal axis of the vehicle. There are three primary toe configurations: toe-in, toe-out, and zero toe.

Each setting serves a different purpose and can affect three major areas of vehicle performance: corner-entry handling, tyre wear, and straight-line stability.

Toe-In

On the front axle, toe-in generally increases straight-line stability, although this can come at the expense of some initial responsiveness during corner turn-in.

On the rear axle, toe-in also improves straight-line stability while introducing a slight slip angle that can help the vehicle put power to the ground.

Toe-in is commonly used for fast road applications.

Toe-Out

On the front axle, toe-out increases turn-in responsiveness but can reduce straight-line stability. At speed, forces acting on a wheel with toe-out can increase the effective toe-out angle, potentially making the vehicle feel more responsive but also more nervous or unpredictable.

Front toe-out can significantly improve initial corner turn-in and front-end response, making it more commonly used for track-day and racing applications.

On the rear axle, toe-out can create a slip angle that may aid rotation but can also increase oversteer characteristics, particularly on a rear-wheel-drive chassis.

Zero Toe

Running zero toe on either axle can help minimize tyre wear and rolling resistance. Any amount of toe causes the tyre to scrub slightly while travelling in a straight line due to the resulting slip angle, which can reduce rolling efficiency.

Zero toe minimizes this effect but does not provide the handling, feedback, or slip-angle characteristics associated with toe-in or toe-out. For this reason, performance-oriented alignments typically incorporate some degree of toe depending on the intended use of the vehicle.
